*** Views today: 10,941 and Thank You!

*** Rolling Stone Magazines choice for the 5 Best Songs of All Time with music videos.

From Denny: I just spent a couple of hours running down some great music video of the Rolling Stones Magazine's choices for the 5 Best Songs Of All Time. They are putting out a special collector's issue tomorrow that has the best 500 songs of all time. Most of it is grounded in the 60's and 70's but some also in the 2000s decade.

I parked this special post over at Dennys Art Sanctuary where some history of the making of the songs is discussed:

What Is Your Quality of Listening to Truly Benefit From the Hearing?

*** Views today: 13,810 and Thank You!

*** Spiritual quote of the day, helping us on our spiritual path to greater enlightenment, happiness and acting on our true purpose in life.

From Denny: What ever spiritual path you choose it is always a good idea to read "what the other guys have to say about a subject." Other religions, ancient philosophers, the guy at the grocery store all may have something enlightening to say to you today.

When you keep your heart open to beautiful spiritual thoughts to contemplate you will find your spiritual development keeps moving along at a respectable pace. Shutting down the emotional heart keeps us from developing. And when we are not moving spiritual energy we are dying bit by bit. That is a spiritual principle of the Universe.

In this particular quote from a Chinese philosopher he talks about the concept of listening with empathy. Too often we half listen and so only half absorb. Western culture in particular is still caught up believing the intellect to be the deepest level of humanity. The intellect is great and enjoyable. It's a superb idea to cultivate it.

However, the intellect is shallow and weak compared to the depths of the human spirit where the power source for the will and spiritual intelligence is located. The shallow intellect just cannot compare nor can it steer the spirit. The spirit can steer the intellect and then the two can work together in wonderful harmony to achieve the best in life for a person.

This philosopher alludes to that relationship. The only way for the intellect to work in harmony with the spirit and achieve great things is for the intellect to set aside arrogance, selfishness, pride, contentiousness, over identification with self, self-absorption and self-centeredness. These areas all involve dark emotions and dark thoughts that stop and hold prisoner spiritual energy. Only when spiritual energy is allowed to move freely can it do its job and help us fulfill our important purpose in life.

Quote

* True empathy requires listening with the whole being. It demands the emptiness of all the faculties. And when the faculties are empty, then the whole being listens. There is then a direct grasp of what is right there before you that can never be heard with the ear or understood with the mind. - Chuang Tzŭ, Chinese philosopher

Sometimes What You Sideline is a Good Thing

*** Views today: 13,815 and Thank You!

Bumble bee and hollyhock flower by audreyjm529 @ flickr

From Denny: How many times have we all heard the story of someone who succeeded at their greatest desire in life without realizing they barely stood a chance at achieving that success? It would seem all the stats were stacked against them yet they succeeded anyway.

Many times it is easy to "over think" a situation or relationship. We can get caught up in planning in too much detail, thinking we can control how Life unfolds. When we do all that planning we tend to be in a stop position. All those strategic goals and time lines for achieving them rarely works out that way - especially if you are on a spiritual path in life.

You can be the most methodical practical person around and I guarantee your plans will get sidelined by the Universe if something more important is to be learned, witnessed or assisted. After all, the greatest honor and job in this Life is to assist another soul in their journey through Life.

The key to success is always to be moving, breathing, living. The best way to succeed is to live in the moment, glide to the next moment and then assess how you feel about it all as you go along. And with that last sentence this quote will give you a grin!

From Denny: This sure has been quite the week with the drama unfolding out in the Gulf of Mexico with the BP oil spill off my Louisiana coast. The cartoonists have had great fun lampooning the various lies and finger pointing from the CEOs involved. The better news is that BP is finally making a bit of headway on corralling some of the oil for clean up, siphoning it into a tanker.

Some headway is better than nothing and at least it has slowed down the rate of gushing oil and natural gas for the moment. Definitely better than using an atomic bomb to blow up the well like the crazy Russians suggested. There's a plan. Nuke the Gulf of Mexico and irradiate the ocean waters for the next thousand years. Fortunately, BP and the government are contemplating lesser crazy options.

As a result of the oil spill there are countless great political cartoons and funny videos by the likes of Colbert to enjoy. And Betty White was the toast of late night TV on SNL after turning in some hilarious performances. She then proceeded to go out all night carousing with the SNL cast after the show. She's almost 89 years old and there's no time to waste for having fun! :)

3 Quotes: Have You Validated Yourself Recently?

*** Views today: 11,925 and Thank You!

From Denny: Life seems to be one thread weaving into another, especially when I'm writing all these blogs, when one post ends up spurring the writing of another. It just goes to show how connected we all are as we intersect with others on our path.

Today I wrote a poem (for The Social Poets blog) about a heart felt issue for many from generations older than mine. It's an issue which was a stain upon their soul that prevented them from living a full and happy life. They were shunned by society, lies were gossiped about them and people presumed to determine they would "never amount to anything in life and were worthless."

It's a hard burden to bear as a child, growing up under such abuse where all of society is pressing against you. Most hearts shut down at this onslaught of fear, anger, critical judgmental attitude and unadulterated harsh disdain.

Over the years, from the time I was a little girl, I've had discussions like in the poem. As I grew older I realized the tremendous power of words to heal immediately and directly - both for yourself as well as others. Words have the power to open the door for another to heal themselves too like in this conversational story poem.

Quotes

* What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives within us. - Henry David Thoreau

* Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no ones definition of your life; define yourself. - Harvey Fierstein

* Our Deepest Fear,
Is not that we are inadequate,
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is out light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?"
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God.
It is not just in some of us,
It is in everyone.
And as we let out own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from out own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. - Marianne Williamson

Love Gift

Leaning on the door frame
I saw the birthday party hum.
People in perpetual motion,
Swirling in and out of the kitchen,
Dealing brightly colored paper plates
Like a deck of cards at a poker game,
Landing soft as a feather in front of the cake.
Melting ice cubes chinked as they carried the cups.
The conversation was full of giggles and loud laughs,
Little children running like yard cats circling the table.

The woman of the day celebrated 100 years of her life.
She sat at the head of the table drinking in the sights,
Smiling and nodding as she was kissed and given gifts
By excited relatives, friendly neighbors and well wishers.
She was happy to be so honored and respected.
There was a twinge of sadness hiding behind her smile.
I drifted toward her to offer my congratulations, and,
As I was invited to sit near her, she began to reminisce.
I sat back and just listened as she recounted her long life.
She spoke of history unfolding, family increasing, friends gone.
She seemed happy, settled and content, except for something missed.

I listened to more than her words; I listened deeper into her heart
And she offered up her troubling hurt from since birth.
She revealed in a hushed whisper she was born illegitimate.
Her father abandoned them, shaming her mother, never to return.
She said it was hard to grow up scorned by neighbors and family
And here she is now, all these years later, honored by their descendants.
She remarked how strange Life can be and felt good that times do change.
Yet the harsh memories still haunted; her family did not know her hurt.
She quickly fell silent, spent, and with searching eyes looked into mine.
She probed for acceptance, reassurance and words that felt right.

I held her gaze tenderly and said what I believed to be true.
She started to tremble, half afraid, half excited; she said she felt new.
I told her none of us can control how we come into this world.
What we can control is how we choose to live and love in this world.
Her voice quivered, as she wept next to me, while the party, like her, began to calm.
“For a life time I’ve craved to hear loving words that I was worthy.”
She settled back into her chair and straightened her shoulders with new pride.
Now the smile was genuine, her heart refreshed; she put down her burden to live.
To her family, her friends, her neighbors, the world: that was her Love Gift.

3 Positive Attitude Quotes to Help Shape Your World

*** Views today: 7,291 and Thank You!

From Denny: Lately, the way the economy has been shifting continually under our feet, never knowing what to expect from month to month, it's a good idea to cultivate a positive attitude. After all, what does a negative attitude get us beyond a moment of acting like a safety valve to blow off frustration and anger?

The problem comes when we stay stuck in anger and frustration. When Life seems to be constantly coming at you - and you know darned well it isn't Lady Karma paying a visit but you have to deal with it anyway - catch your balance by giving yourself and your loved ones around you a refocus.

It's important for us not to react to situations but rather step back, slow down, think and then, after pondering for a while, even a few days, to then act. And when you do act, act in progressive stages, a slow step at a time and observe how the situation presents itself.

As you slow down the resolution of the issue you will be able to clearly see which step is the best to take and which step to succeed that one. Eventually, you work your way through the problem or situation. It seems to be in our American DNA that we want instant gratification and instant one step solutions to complex problems. Well, Life just doesn't work that way or they wouldn't call it "spiritual testing." :)

What's also important for our refocus is to remember we didn't come into this world just to pay bills but rather to impact our world in a positive light. In order to successfully fulfill ourselves we need to quit allowing others to keep our emotions in a tail spin like the tail wagging the dog.

We are spiritual people living in a physical world not the other way around. We have more power to address our circumstances if we only take the time to listen inwardly to our spiritual heart that contains all the wisdom of the ages and the universe.

To finish our refocus when Life presses in make sure to add Hope to the list. Hope keeps our attitude from falling off a cliff into despair. It's also a reminder that just as our situation changed for the negative or chaotic it will change again into the positive and the peaceful - if only we will focus upon that good thought. In no time Life will greet us with our positive focus as if to say, "I don't know what you were stressing about. See? You knew what to do all along and everything worked out right."

Quotes

* We are not here merely to make a living. We are here to enrich the world. - Woodrow Wilson

* We are not creatures of circumstance; we are creators of circumstance. - Benjamin Disraeli

* Practice hope. As hopefulness becomes a habit, you can achieve a permanently happy spirit. - Norman Vincent Peale

Are You Stuck in Life Not Knowing Where to Go Next?

*** Views today: 8,623 and Thank You!

From Denny: At some point in our lives we have all experienced this situation - feeling stuck. There are some useful questions we can ask ourselves to help us examine where we are and why we are planted there:

* Am I in waiting mode, knowing to wait until the opportunity crosses my path, so should I continue waiting because I'm in perfect timing?

* Am I afraid to advance because I'm afraid of what I don't know as opposed to what I do know?

* Am I stuck because of a previous traumatic event or string of events that just zapped the will out of me and I'm burdened with self-doubt, fear and guilt?

Sometimes, we aren't stuck but only that our spirit has us waiting for the right timing for something - and that process can go on for years - like waiting for the right person to marry. Maybe both of you needed 20 years to mature before meeting so that your marriage will turn out successful.

Other times, especially for creative people like artists, musicians and writers it takes decades to mature both in the craft and the inner person before success beats a path to your door. Many a classical composer did not reach the height of their best written music until they were in their late 50's, even when they had been writing since a child. It isn't enough to be talented unless you also develop some serious emotional intelligence to complement your artistry.

People are often frustrated after a serious of setbacks in life and start to question even the smallest things in their lives - like something so silly as to why they like bananas. That's when you know it's time to take a deep breath, step back, exhale and sit down to collect your thoughts quietly. That's when the rational mind is trying to logically figure out a situation and can't get its balance. And that's when it's time to let go of that and allow your spiritual mind to lead. The spiritual mind generally leads at a slower more deliberate pace, carefully picking and choosing the exact moments to act with force of will and power of decision.

If you want a refresher course on what this feels like, then watch the 2000 movie called The Legend of Baggar Vance. The whole movie is set up to bring back a golfer from his war trauma, his self-doubting and interfering rational mind, and help him blossom back into his natural life swing that comes only from his spiritual depths, unique only to him. Here's a bit of dialogue quoted from that pivotal moment when the golfer rediscovered and got back in touch with his spiritual self.

The Legend of Bagger Vance Movie

Bagger Vance (Will Smith) is a caddy that offers advice about more than the game to young golfer Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon, right) in Dreamworks' The Legend of Bagger Vance - 2000

Quote

Bagger Vance:
What I'm talkin about is a game... A game that can't be won only played...

Rannulph Junuh: You don't understand...

Bagger Vance: I don't need to understand... Ain't a soul on this entire earth ain't got a burden to carry he don't understand, you ain't alone in that... But you been carryin' this one long enough... Time to go on... lay it down...

Rannulph Junuh: I don't know how...

Bagger Vance: You got a choice... You can stop... Or you can start...

Rannulph Junuh: Start?

Bagger Vance: Walkin...

Rannulph Junuh: Where?

Bagger Vance: Right back to where you always been... and then stand there... Still... real still... And remember...

Rannulph Junuh: It's too long ago...

Bagger Vance:
Oh no sir it was just a moment ago... Time for you to come on out the shadows Junuh... Time for you to choose...

Rannulph Junuh: I can't...

Bagger Vance: Yes you can... but you ain't alone... I"m right here with ya... I've been here all along... Now play the game... Your game... The one that only you was meant to play... Then one that was given to you when you come into this world... You ready?... Stike that ball Junuh don't hold nothin back give it everything... Now's the time... Let yourself remember... Remember YOUR swing... That's right Junuh, settle yourself... Let's go... Now is the time, Junuh...

Posts Roundup This Week at Dennys Blogs 9 May 2010

*** Views today: 11,777 and Thank You!

From Denny: This sure has been a wild ride for the news, the BP oil spill attempt at clean-up, the crazy British election and the huge sudden drop in the stock market. I gathered some of the better stories over at Dennys Global Politics.

You just have to read about the odd new health stories about empathy nasal spray for men and the strange neck treatment for PTSD relief. And the political cartoons were out in full force as social commentary on it all so you know I just had to park a number of those posts on several blogs for Saturday! :)

Hope everyone had a great Mothers Day! And thank you all for your great support!

Mothers Day Quote From Rose Kennedy

*** Views today: 13,899 and Thank You!

Photo of Rose Kennedy with son President John Kennedy - from JFK Library

From Denny: It's one thing to believe good things for your children's futures; it's quite another to have captured this large vision like Rose Kennedy did. Surely, her vision was highly unusual, containing infinite possibilities.

What I like best about Rose's thoughtful quote here is she thought beyond just how her children would do in the world. She carefully considered how her children would impact the souls around them.

Happy Mother's Day!

Quote

* Whenever I held my newborn baby in my arms, I used to think that what I said and did to him could have an influence not only on him but on all whom he met, not only for a day or a month or a year, but for all eternity - a very challenging and exciting thought for a mother. - Rose Kennedy
